About wildlife viewing
Wildlife viewing on a farm is usually unhurried and led by whoever knows the land best. Expect an early start or a late-evening walk, since that is when most native birds and nocturnal species are about. Hosts often know exactly which gully holds the kereru, which fence line the weka patrol, and where a glow-worm bank sits along a creek. Coastal farms may offer seal or seabird viewing from the cliffs. Many farms run trap lines for stoats, rats and possums, and hosts are usually happy to explain what they are catching and why — it is often the most memorable part for children.

What native birds am I most likely to see on a farm?
Tui, fantail (piwakawaka), kereru (wood pigeon), silvereye and harrier hawk are widespread on farmland with bush remnants. Morepork are commonly heard after dark. Weka are locally common in parts of the West Coast, Gisborne and Marlborough.
Do I need binoculars?
They help, but plenty of farm bird life is seen at close range from a track or verandah. Ask your host — some keep a spare pair.
Is there a best time of day?
Dawn and the hour before dark are by far the most productive. Middle of the day is the quietest time for birds.
Can I see kiwi on a farm stay?
Only in specific areas, and almost always on a guided night walk run by a local conservation project rather than the farm itself. Ask before booking if this is the reason for your trip.
