This is the single most-asked destination question we see, and the honest answer starts with a correction: there is very little farmland inside Queenstown or Wanaka. Both towns are hemmed in by lake and mountain. The farm stays are in the country around them, and that distance is the point rather than the problem.

Where the properties actually are

The high country runs north and east of both towns. In practice that means the Cardrona Valley between Wanaka and Queenstown, the country around Lake Hawea and Lake Wanaka, and further out toward Omarama, the Lindis Pass and the Maniototo. Expect 30 to 90 minutes' drive from either town centre. Some are considerably further — a genuine high country station is not a suburb of Queenstown and does not pretend to be. That has a practical consequence worth planning for: you will be driving. There is no useful public transport to these properties, roads are narrow and unlit, and in winter some require care or chains. If you want to walk to dinner, stay in town.

That median sits slightly below the NZ$260 median across all 60 of our listings. That is worth stating plainly because the opposite is widely assumed: the Otago high country is **not** the most expensive place in New Zealand to stay on a farm. In our data Hawke's Bay has a higher median (NZ$500 across 5 listings) than Otago does. Wine country, not mountain country, carries the premium. Against Queenstown itself, a farm stay is usually the cheaper option for the same dates — and you are getting a property rather than a room. The caveat: seven listings is a small sample. Treat the median as indicative of what we hold, not as a survey of the district.

When to go

**Spring, September to November**, is lambing and calving, and on a high country station that is the most interesting time to be there. **Summer, December to February**, has the long evenings and the best walking, and books out earliest. **Autumn, March to May**, is muster season in the high country — genuinely spectacular, and quieter than summer. **Winter, June to August**, puts you near Cardrona, Treble Cone and the Remarkables. Some properties close; those that stay open are cheapest then.

If you want Queenstown nightlife, stay in Queenstown. If you want the landscape that Queenstown sells and a night somewhere quiet, drive the extra forty minutes into the high country — it is usually cheaper than a hotel in town, and it is the version of Central Otago people actually come for.
